Last season Stony Brook was a buzzer beater away from reaching the NCAA Tournament. I can only imagine the level of focus and hunger the team is entering with this season. Jameel Warney stood out to me last season because of his consistency and level of play. Each game he put up big numbers, but efficiently he was the best in the country. He finished the season with the highest NBA player efficiency rating in the nation. Many people around the country may not know of him, but after this season they will. I reached out to Coach Pikiell for more insight, he had nothing but great things to say about Warney. Our interview was more conversational. I highlighted a few quotes, see below:
Stony Brook Head Coach Steve Pikiell
"He can flat out play. A lot of (NBA) teams have shown interest, still expecting a few more"
"Would have more exposure with high level programs, but decided to stay"
"He's a throwback kid, good worker, loyal. He's been at one high school, one AAU program, one college. Rare loyalty"
"Teams have compared him to DeJuan Blair and Malik Rose. Most recently Richaun Holmes of the Sixers"
"One of the best passing bigs in the country"
"True low post guy. Good one on one scorer, rarely gets his shot block. Has a knack for scoring around the basket. Lead the country in double doubles, gets it done on both ends"
"Graduating in December, will start grad school soon after"
