Charles Matthews has the basketball physique, length, and size to be a solid prospect. He's a good athlete with the ability to get to the rim, strong slasher (1.22 PPP, 64% - Synergy). He finishes well against one defender, but tends to struggle finishing in traffic against multiple bodies. Sometimes he settles when he has the mismatch against slower defenders, something that caught my eye in the Final Four. His poor free throw shooting (55%) could contribute to this.
In transition you really get a chance to see his athleticism. He runs the floor well filling lanes and looks to attack the rim. Although he's a good half court scorer (0.89 PPP) in transition you see more of his potential (1.10 PPP). One major concern is his inconsistency shooting the ball. Last season he shot 31% from three, 55% from two, but as a Spot Up shooter he shot 39% (Synergy). This is one area he'll need to improve in order to be considered a first rounder. He's a good playmaker but at times he tends to force the action. You would like to see him be more patient and let plays develop.
